If you picture a small American town, there is a good chance you picture the Northeast: a white church on a green, a covered bridge, a harbor full of working boats. These charming small towns in the US Northeast are also some of the easiest to combine, since a few hours’ drive links several of them.
Vermont: Stowe and Woodstock
Stowe sits below Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak. In winter it is a ski town; the rest of the year visitors walk or cycle the paved Stowe Recreation Path along the river, drive up through Smugglers’ Notch, and visit the lodge founded by the von Trapp family of The Sound of Music fame. Woodstock is all village green and Federal-style houses, with Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park and the Billings Farm & Museum at the edge of town and Quechee Gorge a short drive east.
Maine: Bar Harbor and Camden
Bar Harbor is the gateway to Acadia National Park, with the Park Loop Road and Cadillac Mountain minutes from its shops and harbor. Farther down the coast, Camden is the postcard harbor town: schooners in the bay and the view from Mount Battie in Camden Hills State Park.

Massachusetts and Connecticut
Nantucket, reached by ferry or plane, keeps cobblestone streets and gray-shingled houses from its whaling days; the Whaling Museum tells that story. In the Berkshires, Stockbridge is home to the Norman Rockwell Museum, and its main street looks much as Rockwell painted it. In Connecticut, Mystic has Mystic Seaport Museum, where the 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan is berthed, plus the Mystic Aquarium. For more of the state, see Best in Mass.

New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania
Cooperstown, on Otsego Lake, is home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Lake Placid hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980, and you can still tour the Olympic venues. Best in Upstate NY covers both regions in more depth. On the Jersey Shore, Cape May is famous for its painted Victorian houses and the Cape May Lighthouse, and in Pennsylvania’s Poconos, Jim Thorpe pairs a Victorian downtown with trails and rafting in the Lehigh Gorge.
